For thousands of years, Persian rugs functioned as visual biographies. Their borders, medallions, and motifs formed a precise language - encoding belief, status, place, and memory in wool and silk.

Modersia revives this design methdology, following the traditional architecture of the Persian rug - its balance, symmetry, and symbolic hierarchy - while replacing historical ornament with the motifs of a modern life. Architecture becomes geometry. Obsession becomes pattern. Memory becomes form.

How the rug is used remains the same. Only the story has changed.

Through a careful process of distillation, the themes, structures, and influences that shape your world are translated into a coherent visual language. Each element is considered with intent, allowing meaning to emerge through pattern, balance, and form.

The final design is then passed to master weavers and brought into existence by hand knotting over many months, using same original techniques used over 2000 years ago.

Modersia is the work of textile artist and designer Mark Hanlon, whose practice began in 2011 with a deep fascination for Persian carpets - not only their beauty, but their ability to carry meaning across time.

After more than a decade creating bespoke textiles for architectural interiors, Modersia represents a return to that original source: the rug as a vessel for story, identity, and legacy.

This work is not about reviving tradition. It is about using tradition precisely as it was intended.
