Textile Art

Art Woven

Modersia creates original textile artworks that tell stories through material, pattern, and form.

Each piece is conceived as a work of art - shaped by narrative, atmosphere, and meaning rather than tradition or function. The stories may be personal or spatial, intimate or abstract. What matters is not literal representation, but how a story is felt once it has been woven into being.

These are works designed to live with you - to quietly alter how a space feels, how it holds sound, light, and presence. Art that doesn’t announce itself, but stays.

We didn’t know exactly what it would become, and that was part of the joy. Seeing the idea slowly take shape and then take a physical form felt very natural

Narrative in Thread

Storytelling sits at the heart of every Modersia textile artwork. Each commission begins with a narrative impulse: a place, a memory, a relationship, a rhythm, a belief. These starting points are translated - not illustrated - into woven language.

Pattern becomes structure. Colour becomes emotion. Abstraction becomes meaning.
Some works are bold and graphic, others restrained and meditative. All are designed to unfold slowly, revealing depth through time, touch, and proximity.

The aim is not to explain a story - but to let it exist within the weave.

There’s a real presence to the work. You notice the weight, the texture - it feels made, not manufactured

The Work

Modersia’s textile artworks move fluidly between narrative and abstraction, balancing meaning with visual and material presence.

Commissions may take the form of:

Art Rugs

Grounding works that anchor a space through weight, pattern, and composition. These pieces often respond to architecture, movement, or the emotional tone of a room - using abstraction and repetition to create a sense of cohesion and calm.

Woven Blankets and Throws

Intimate narrative pieces designed to be lived with. These works often explore personal stories, symbols, or moments, translated into softer, tactile forms that invite interaction and closeness.

Tapestries

Large-scale woven artworks created for walls and architectural settings. These pieces allow narrative and abstraction to unfold across scale - introducing texture, depth, and acoustic softness while giving a space its own visual language.

Process

Each artwork begins with a conversation rather than a fixed brief. This may involve personal stories, spatial context, emotional direction, or simply a shared sense of intent.
Modersia Tapestry
Design develops through exploration and refinement — shaping narrative into pattern, proportion, and rhythm.

The process balances instinct with discipline, allowing abstraction and meaning to coexist without overstatement.

Once resolved, the work is woven by skilled artisans using high-quality materials and traditional techniques. Time is treated as an essential part of the process, ensuring the finished piece carries both clarity and depth.
Modersia - Mark Hanlon

The Artist

Modersia is the textile art practice of Mark Hanlon. Working across rugs, blankets, and tapestries, Mark uses weaving as a contemporary artistic medium - combining narrative thinking with graphic sensibility and material understanding.

His work exists between art and object, designed to sit naturally within lived spaces while retaining strong conceptual intent.

This practice runs alongside Modersia’s Persian rug commissions, offering a freer, more experimental approach to textile art - while remaining grounded in storytelling, authorship, and craft.

Commissions

Textile Art commissions are undertaken on a limited basis.

Each piece is designed personally by Mark Hanlon and produced in collaboration with skilled weavers. Scale, format, and timelines vary depending on the nature of the work, but every commission prioritises narrative depth, material integrity, and longevity.

Modersia works with private clients worldwide.
